2012 Auction Sells Out

The Auxiliary Board of St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children hosted its 7th Annual Gala and Auction, presented by Checkered Flag Volkswagen, on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at The Westin at Town Center in Virginia Beach. About 300 guests at the sold-out gala enjoyed a three-course dinner, entertainment by The Josh Walker Trio and spirited silent and live auctions — including bidding on the opportunity to help the children and young adults of St. Mary's go on more field trips into the community.

Checkered Flag Volkswagen donated a beautiful all new-new 2012 silver Beetle pictured for a raffle to benefit the children and young adults of St. Mary's Home. Congratulations to Katherine Dutlinger of William E. Wood and Associates Realtors, whose winning ticket was drawn during the gala.

Thank you to all the runners, walkers, volunteers, staff, families, sponsors and more who made the 2011 St. Mary's 5K, presented by Portfolio Recovery Associates, a great event. Click here to see the chip time results.

St. Mary’s to Help Adults, Too

St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children plans to build a 10,000-square-foot expansion with 12 private rooms to offer adults who have severe disabilities the comprehensive and expert care for which St. Mary’s is recognized.

Save the Date: Groundbreaking for the adult home is scheduled for Sept. 15, 2011, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception for donors and friends. The adult wing is expected to open in 2012.

Inspiring Stories

Meet Bob Guess, Boat Builder and St. Mary's Supporter

Bob Guess has been fascinated by the craft of boat-building since he was a child playing among the cedar shavings in his grandfather's shop. Now, in his own workshop at his home, he builds detailed ships’ models -- a hobby he uses to help the children and young adults of St. Mary’s by donating the models to be sold during St. Mary’s Auxiliary’s annual auction. Learn more about Guess in St. Mary’s 2009 Annual Report.

A Matter of the Heart

Myra Perdue resisted when a pediatrician first suggested that she consider placing her daughter at St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children. After all, she'd been taking good care of Amelia at home for more than 11 years.

Six months later, Amelia's medical needs were growing, and Perdue felt her daughter could benefit from more help. So she and her husband visited the Home. "When I went in the door of St. Mary's, I truly felt at peace," she said. "I felt warmth there. Everything was in order."

"I still feel that way. The staff do their absolute best every single day to make the children at St. Mary's feel that it is their home. Everything there is done from the heart. That's why St. Mary's can't be replaced. It's a matter of the heart."

You can read more about Myra Perdue and Amelia in St. Mary's 2007-2008 Biennial Report.

Through Planned Giving

Every time Carl M. Albero visits St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children, he leaves touched by the children and the dedicated staff who care for them. "How can you not care about St. Mary's?" said Albero, a member of the Home's Board of Trustees. "It's just an unbelievable story when you go through there. They're good people helping these children who can't help themselves."

Albero, a retired Navy captain and cofounder and former president and CEO of AMSEC, has been a generous supporter of St. Mary's Home for a number of years. He plans to continue supporting the children of SMHDC by remembering the Home in his will.
